How-To Top Destinations on the web: ITsVista.com

As its name suggests, ITsVista.com is a web destination dedicated to Windows Vista. The website was started in December 2006, just a bit before we launched Windows Vista for Beginners. The person behind this website is Joseph Fieber, a very friendly computer enthusiast with whom we collaborated in a few occasions.

When browsing this website, you will find the following categories: Tips and Tricks, Windows Updates & Hotfixes (with complete descriptions and links for direct downloads), Knowledge Base Links to articles describing known Windows Vista errors, a complete list of Windows Vista Keyboard Shortcuts, information about Windows Vista's Services and Commands, a few Product Reviews, a Glossary of terms explaining many abbreviations you might encounter while working with Windows Vista and a collection of Videos and Web Links.

When ITsVista.com was launched, it was focused mostly on tutorials and very useful tips & tricks targeted mostly at beginners. Since then, the site has changed a lot, encompassing many new content categories and changing also its target audience.

Good things

There are many nice things about the website. The ones I consider to be the most important are:

  • The Glossary section - I think this section will be very useful for novices. I have found there all the Windows Vista abbreviations I could think of, all them being nicely explained;
  • The Vista's Commands section - ITsVista.com has a list of 85 Windows Vista commands. I don't know if they are all the possible ones or not but you'll surely find here the most commonly used ones. For all commands you will find an explanation about what they do and the complete list of accepted parameters and the description of what each parameter does.
  • Looks - the theme of the site looks very similar to Windows Vista. Not only it looks good but one can also navigate with ease: you can clearly see the content categories, access the search function and check out all the Recent and Most popular entries.

Top Articles

Here are some of the articles I would recommend to our readers:

Glossary Items
ITsVISTA Tip 24: Run Vista for 120 Days without Activation Using SLMGR’s Rearm Function
ITsVISTA Tip 47: Improve Wireless Connectivity in Vista
ITsVISTA Tip 37: Why Certain Web Sites are Slow in Vista
ITsVISTA Tip 52: Map a Drive to an FTP site in Vista
ITsVISTA Tip 56: Display your ‘Home’ icon on your desktop in Vista

Things that could be improved

Some of the things I consider to be worth improving are the following:

  • The number of ads - even though they fit very well with the overall design, the website seems to be a bit too loaded with ads. Eliminating one or two block of ads might improve the user experience. However, I'm not sure what impact will this have on the revenue generated by the site;
  • The Videos section - it contains many commercials that promote Windows Vista. Personally I don't find this to bring too much relevance to readers. Since they are visiting this website it means they use Windows Vista already and they don't need to be convinced to buy it. I think it would be nice to post more videos with tutorials, useful tips & tricks or solutions to common problems;
  • The Tips and Tricks section - don't get me wrong! There is nothing wrong with the quality of the tips & tricks already published. They are all very well written. However, there are not too many published. This section stops at Tip 63 and it hasn't been updated since November 2007.

Conclusion

Although only the Web Links section is being updated on a constant basis lately, there is plenty of useful content to be found on ITsVista.com. If you haven't visited this website already, you should definitely give it a try. Chances are you will find plenty of useful content.
