Microphone w/headset won't work

I have Windows Vista Business Pro 6.0 OS. 2 gig RAM. Soundcard is Vinyl AC'97 Codec. Mic is unmuted. I have joined several forums and cannot get my microphone w/headset to work. Sound is great, however. Drivers are up-to-date. What do I need to do?
