Pls, help!!
THX!
Make sure you don't have
Make sure you don't have Outlook Express open when you copy the files! They won't import if you copied them while OE was using them.
dbx
Well,I managed to import it this way.
1.Unhidde it in old "\Documents and Settings\Someone\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\" folder.
2.Then copy "Outlook Express" folder(which is inside of previous folder),because its easy to find it that way.
3.After that import from messages from Windows mail, file many,Microsoft Outlook expres 6.
P.S.
Don't try to find messages in outlook folder ,but just set that folder for searching, don't browse inside of it.
migrating OE 6 to Vist Email
You must import the whole email folder at the upper folder level, NOT individual .dbx files for each folder.
I copied my old OE6 email folder, with all its 30 or so sub-folders to an external drive, then impored the while email folder to Vist email, no problem, eventually!
migrating OE6 to Vista Mail
Thanks, that worked well. My OE6 wouldn't export the messages, coming up with a message about 'failing to initialise MAPI', so I had to give up on that and just try copying the .DBX files.
The dumb 'Import' dialogue doesn't tell you to just select the directory containing the .DBX files from the next level up, it just says that files were not found when you open that directory - I have had this problem with other software in the past, and you would have thought that a market-leader (!?) could have sorted something like that!
By the way, it imported all the folders into another folder named 'Imported Folder',so I then had to drag all the folders into the Vista Mail Inbox to duplicate my OE6 folder tree.
Thanks again.
This worked
Thanks PhilipCT. I moved the dbx files into the main directory, and Vista found them just fine.
Problem importing contacts
Imported contacts as indicated in instructions. The only problem is that Windows mail imported only part of my contacts. The progress bar gets half way and will not go any farther. How do I get it to import all my contacts. Also some of my notes are imported as a separate contact. I can deal with this, but mention it here in case someone else also encounters this problem, and you can provide a resolution for this.
Thank you.
Failure of importing
Failure of importing contacts is probably due to commas in the Notes column and commas in the name column of your exported CSV file. The commas in the name column are probably malformed anyway so when editing your CSV file with Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet program, look for empty entries in the lastname column and fix first/middle/last name, and fix the displayed name column. Next change commas in the Notes column to semi-colons. Look for malformed continuation of notes into the next row and delete the inserted row.
See my vista.htm page (listed as my home page here) for more information. I've had previous experience with this and you used to have to add an additional column at the end and put something in each cell like a space -- that doesn't appear to be needed anymore.
Problem importing contacts into mailing-lists
Part of the original question on this page but it had no "Reply" link
so will answer it here.
I had to create the mailing lists manually myself, was bad enough with 170+ names into various lists, you task is probably much worse, but I've not seen any other method, see
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/vista/vista.htm#mailing
Had the "Department" column been properly reported, task might have been a wee bit faster, but still have to verify each name.
Thanks for the tutorial
Thanks for the tutorial for migrating messages and address book. It took a few trial and errors but I got the bulk of it transferred.
All Message folders, appear as you rightly said, in the IMPORTED FOLDER' created when you execute the import. I managed to get my old INBOX, SENT and DRAFT messages dragged into the new respective folders, but my custom folders won't budge from within the IMPORTED folder.
My address book Subgroups and Folders didn't export from OE6 at all....so I guess I've lost those, unless I rebuild them one address at a time into the new MAIL client. :-(
Thanks again.....very helpful
Moving imported folders back into local folders
Strange, I could move the special folders fine, but have to copy the contents of the Imported Inbox iand paste nto the contents of the Inbox. I don't pay attention to threads in Inbox so don't know if that would work for threads, I think it would as they are based on Message-ID.
There was another question somewhere else about .dbx files from OE. They no longer exist in Windows Email as they are now separate .eml files for each email -- which should simplify things considerably for reliability and for backup.
See my previous reply for Main and Shared identities using
WAB /a
in the Start Run of your original system. Also can be seen on my homepage registered here.
Kind of think posting a meaningful title, if you have a question would be better for you, for the Administrator, and for others looking to solve same/similar problems would be better.
