Irritating Mystery Problem

Ok, I don't even know how to explain what's been going on with my computer. It's a Dell laptop I got back in November, and even since I got it it's had this problem. I'm not gonna pretend I'm super computer literate, but I've never had this kind of experience with a computer.

What happens is that now and then I'll look down to see what time it is, and I'll notice that my clock has frozen. After that if I try to open a new window, all I can see is the window itself, but no folders or files within it. The window comes up but I can't do anything with it. Whenever this happens, the taskbar either disappears entirely or whatever windows I may have minimized at the time seem to shift; by that I mean they literally move and/or vanish. Then if I move the cursor over the taskbar it reappears, albeit temporarily. If I click the start button, the menu window comes up, but again, it's empty; empty in the sense that I for some reason can't see it, but can still click on new programs. Also, the text on my desktop icons seems to take on bolder, darker lines and shadows. I restart and log back in and everything works fine, for a time, until it happens again. It doesn't seem to be particularly harmful, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the single most irritating things I've ever had happen to a computer. It's so profoundly infuriating and confusing that I don't even know if I gave a legitimate description of what's wrong.

Has anybody ever even heard of something like this? If so, is it easily and/or inexpensively fixable? I've looked and looked and couldn't find anything similar.

Windows Vista SUCKS!! I don't recommend it, not yet that is. Not until they fix the kinks.

--------> I have the same problem, occurs after about an hour of the computer running. Would like to know how to fix it as well. Rebooting should not be an option...<--------
****This never happened with XP.****

I thought I was the only one

I thought I was the only one with this problem. It happened to me on my HP/compaq laptop. Mine was a free upgrade version from XP to Vista Home Premium. Are yours the same case as mine? I tried looking around for a fix but to no avail.
