Burning CD's with Vista. No Autoplay Box

I cannot burn a CD or DVD with Vista. Each time I put a disc in the tray I am told to insert one. No Auto Play box comes up at all. Have checked all drivers for the CD and DVD burners and they are OK with up todate drivers. Just once, the words Auto Play came up when I right clicked on DVD/RWDrive(F) but then it said 'This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action, create an association in the Set Associations control panel'.
Haven't a clue as to what that means.
Do I need to have some software to burn a CD and so bypass what I have, as I have read a report that the burners installed in Vista are pretty useless. Is this right?
I have wasted so much time trying to do what most people seem to regard as a simple operation..
My computer is a year old.
