Sound turns its self off.

In the year since I bought my HP laptop with Vista 6.0, the sound has turned it self off. First time it happened, I had to take it back the store where I bought it to have a tech turn it back on. The last two times, I had to reboot the computer. I try going to the control panel to resolve the issue with no luck. All the trouble shooting tips that I come across always involve checking the cable that runs from the computer to the speakers, never anything about laptops. Does anybody have any ideas on how to turn the sound back on without having to reboot?

@How to

1. Also you can right click the taskbar (the bottom bar)->Properties->Notification area->and mark Volume. If the sound is off you will now quickly notice it by the red marker on the sound icon in the left bottom corner.

2. I had a similar problem...Just to see if it's the same problem. When you can't hear a sound coming from your computer, stop all program that are producing sounds -winamp, jet audio etc - and open windows media player. Play a song in it and see if it works.

For 2 the fix is: play a song. stop the song (the proper way), close the program (media player-also the proper way) and now open your favorite program -winamp, jetaudio etc-

3. Just out of curiosity, since it sometimes happens to me. Look at your program -winamp, windows media player etc- and see the sound level (take it to maxim).

4. To see if this isn't a problem of your soundcard open a browser (Firefox, IE, Opera etc) and go to youtube. Play a loud clip and see if the sound is heard. If it is then your problem is caused by the audio program you use.

There are many more fixes but they'll end up being like troubleshooting "check your cable" kind of advice.
