importing .pst files into Windows Mail

Hi
Before decommissioning my old desktop I created .pst files and stored them on my external hard drive. I now have my new laptop with Vista windows mail and it will not allow me to import these files. Can anyone help as I have tons of really important emails that I need?
Many thanks

Cannot import directly

From what i know, Windows Mail cannot directly import e-mail messages from a .pst file created by Outlook from Microsoft Office. You need to install Microsoft Outlook, import the .pst files and then import in Windows Mail the messages from Outlook, while Outlook is installed and running.

However, Outlook is more advanced than Windows Mail and I don't think there is a reason for you to change the e-mail client.

This is so unbelievably

This is so unbelievably unacceptable. Someone has an old computer running Outlook and then they buy some POS with Vista on it. Then they have this crazy notion that they should be able to transfer their emails from the old system to the new system using the softwares' Import and Export functionality! Nutty! Just nutty!

WTF is Microsoft thinking in requiring Outlook users to install that f--- software on their Vista machines in order to transfer the mail? Seriously, what the hell are they thinking? And I tried installing my Outlook 2000 on this new laptop and the software wouldn't work. And as far as I know the newer versions of Outlook use an internet-based locking mechanism to fight piracy. So how are you going to reinstall those on your new Vista PC?

So here I am unable to use my email because those a**holes in Redmond made a new email software that was incompatible with their previous email software. I want to see that company crushed so bad. I'm so happy Vista has its much-deserved horrible reputation.

Idea

If you have Outlook 2000, then it doesn't work on Windows Vista. What you can do in this scenario is the following:
On your Windows XP & Outlook 2000 PC, start up Outlook Express and import the e-mail from Outlook to Outlook Express. The import will be done automatically.

After this, read carefully this guide:

and migrate your mail from Outlook Express to Windows Mail.

I hope this helps,
Ciprian

AGREED!

I couldn't agree more than I do with you. I mean it's not like I'm trying to import Lotus Notes files to Outlook. Can't Microsoft perform this BASIC FUNCTIONALITY as an upgrade from the prior email client to the new one? Go I can't wait until Google completely undermines Microsoft and that crappy company with crappier software goes teets up. I'm sick of beta testing Micorsoft software and them never fixing it to what used to be acceptable BEFORE releasing it to the public.

There I feel better.

But I still have PST files I can't get migrated on to Vista PC with Windows Mail. I guess I'll just brute force it and forward all my emails from my old PC!

Completely agree

I am stuck in the same scenario. I have a new laptop with vista, (waiting for the new OS this fall...) Had an XP that died - but the hard drive was still good, so now I can access the hard drive/files, but not run the old programs. So I'm stuck in this mess too.. VERY frustrating.
