No 'Search' on Vista Start Menu Sidebar

I've been trying to figure out how to easily search my whole system for certain files (e.g., all the *.doc files) and have run into several suggestions a) use the Start Search at the bottom of the Start Menu (seems to work OK for Apps, but not for wildcard file enties like *.doc)
b) go to Vista Start menu, click on Start, and start operating with something looking more like Advanced Search. My biggest Problem is that I don't even have a Search entry (generally shown just above Recent Documents on some of the Screenshots I've seen). What controls the format of the Start Menu sidebar? Where might the Search entry have disappeared to? Any other possibilities for workarounds to filename searches similar to XP in Vista (I'm not interested in looking up Apps, which the Start Search at the bottom of the Start list does fairly well)

Thanks,

Jeff
