WMP..various problems! Any ideas?

Been having some puzzling problems with WMP! It will shut down occasionally and display a msg reading (Media player not responding..also the "hangtime" is very long! It also seems to not play various items in my library! Can you actually uninstall WMP and then reinstall it? Will i lose my audio files? Any feedback would be most welcome!
