I have a 320 gig hardrive and would like to partition it into 4 drives. I used to use PartitionMagic with my XP but it is not compatable with Vista.
It seem like the even the termenalogy has changed in vista.
I heard a lot of horror stories about partitioning Vista and I really don't want to have any problems.
Is it best to just sit and wait till a program comes around?
I have looked at Paragon and Acronis but, again horror stories.
Thank You!!!
Not true
That is not true. Most manufacturers updated their software to be compatible with Windows Vista.
I don't know about Partition Magic but Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 (for example) is compatible with Windows Vista and you can partition your disk with it.
If the partitioning software you have is older and does not support Windows Vista you could use it in Windows XP to create the partitions you want to and then install Windows Vista.
Alternatively you can create partitions during the Windows Vista setup and you don't need to have third party software tools for this task.
PS: Windows Vista uses NTFS just like Windows XP so it should not be a problem if you partition your HDD with older tools as long as you create NTSF partitions!
laptop OEM vista
my laptop is oem vista home premium. It didnt come with vista dvd, have to create it ourself from the recovery software come together with the laptop.
After I create a backup disk, I try to recover it back for the testing. But too bad it unable to let choose the partition size when booting with the disk. It just show 'you will lost all the data .. blablabla..' ..
Does it have any other ways to do the partition before installing windows?
1.goto control panel....

Help me with partitioning plz
I have windows vista buisness and i want to partition my HDD so i can install XP on it can you please help me?
Check out this guide
In this case you should check out this article:
How to dual boot Vista and XP (with Vista installed first) -- the step-by-step guide
Vista has its own Partition tools.
Vista has its own limited Partition management tools. Open the control panel, switch to classic view and then click Administrative tools, computer management & then Disk management. Right click on the drive you want to add partitions to, & select SHRINK VOLUME, give it a size and follow prompts. Then you can partition the "free space" into a partition, & then repeat in that partition. I found that I could only shrink the "C" partition to 200gb allowing only 120 left to create any other partitions 0n my 320gb drive.
Hope it helps. Or you can get Paragons "Partition Manager", it works with Vista
Partition Tool in Vista
The backup I created was from a 80 Gb HD and tried to restore it onto a 250 Gb drive. After some playing around in the GUI command prompt, I finally found my volume to make the backup work. When it was recovered the volume size still only said 80 Gb. Went to the same location you spoke of, but there was no options to "expand" the partition for the unallocated space. I heard someone else do it with Vista without Partition software, but dont know how he did it. What should I do?
Partitioning Worked
Thanks a45rpm33. Your suggestion helped me to partition my drive successful.
partitioning vista
I am at loss also, why Vista doesn't let me partition my 120 Gb hard drive with Vista OEM according to my own requirements.
Vista takes up only 16 Gb on "C", yet it doesn't let me downsize below 50 Gb, where I wish to have only 25 Gb. My programmes, files, and even the page files are on seperate partitions already, so the 25 Gb should suffice for "C".
Could someone help me how can I overcome the "shrinking" limit????
ps. I found the comments of the members about the various solutions very useful, and at the same time I am completely at loss how MS can market such a half-cooked product having so many problems...
Many thanks,
