Brighter screen when plugged in?

Im sorry if this has already been answered, I tried using the search, but I didnt come up with anything.
I let a friend use my computer yesterday, and when I started it up today, the screen wont go brighter when I plug it in. The screen is very hard to see when its this dim. How do I fix this?
I have a Dell Studio XPS Laptop that I've had for about a month now.
