windows defender turns itself off

my pc runs xp sp2. my antivirus is avg 2011 free version.
i recently installed windows defender and set it to be ON.
each time i start my pc i get a message "windows defender is off" and invites me to turn it on again.
why does windows defender get switched off ??
any ideas ??
