Vista connected to Internet but can not browse web.

Hello,

I decided to take the plunge and purchased myself Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 to take advantage of my 64bit hardware, mainly for all the latest games, I was always quite happy with XP. I was previously using Winxp 32bit SP3 and never had any problems at all, I do not recall ever have a BSoD.

After the installation I found that I could not browse any websites using IE. I thought it was security or firewall problem so disabled them all. I have not even installed any 3 party software yet, so no virus scanners to disable. In the network settings it shows Computer -> Home Network -> Internet connection.

I can connect to my works VPN and web mail services just fine using IE/Fire fox (I had to download FF onto a flash card on another computer). I can ping websites IP's but just can not connect to them via HTTP. The exact same thing happens to my friends laptop running Vista when he comes over and uses my internet. We can both connect to WoW and other game servers just fine, but he could not browse the internet even though he was connected.

I am using a D-Link DI-804 Residential Gateway Router with my cable modem plugged into the WAN socket and I have a Wireless D-Link Access Point plugged into the uplink and this has worked fine for many years. All of my devices can connect and browse the internet just fine, either via Wireless or LAN including 3 PC's running either OSX, WinXP and Win 2000. I have a PSP, Iphone and IPOD Touch all connect and browse the internet fine with absolutely no problems.
If I plug my cable modem directly into the PC running Vista everything works fine!

I have tried searching forums and other various websites for the same problem and it seems that most of the fixes offered worked for those people, but they do not work for me.
I tried flushing the socket using the Winsock reset commands but this does not do the trick. I have spoken to someone at work today and they said I may need to add the PC's network card Mac address to my router to allow it access, but I do not see the sense in this as I have not needed to do this to any other of my devices.

I just can not find an answer and this post is my last hope!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Mal

Question

Can you browse web pages using Firefox?

connected to internet but can not browse

I have the same problem as Mal. I have an Acer laptop and it used to work fine. It seemed that when certain updates from Microsoft were loaded. I think SP1 was the first problem and I could browse again after doing a restore. That solution no longer works. I have reset the winsock and disabled tcp auto-tuning . I can get on line for about three or four minutes, and then I am blocked.
From browsing the net I see that others have the problem and many seem to be Acer laptops.
Unless someone can help , my next step seems to be to load XP.
Any ideas?
Thanks, rlw9999
I should also note that I use Firefox, but neither that or IE will work, either wireless or connected hard wired to the modem Liksys modem or the Comcast modem.

WTF!!!

The same problem here, except I have my laptop plugged directly to my cable modem. Games, MSN: all work fine but IE and FF refuse to display websites. I have gone through many simple quick fixes and none have worked. It seemed to start after I downloaded some update, my initial thoughts were some buffed up pissed off firewall domming my browsers but now I am wondering if there is anything I can do before formatting.

First Suggestion....

In IE Tools Internet Options, Connections LAN settings make sure all the boxes are unchecked.

I had this problem too....

I had a new HP laptop for Xmas with Windows Vista. I have spent nearly 2 weeks trying to get IE and FF working. After many hours on the phone to AOL, PC World and Microsoft they couldn't resolve my problem. In the end I thought I would give Belkin a try alothough i knew the problem wasn't with my route as all my other PC's were working fine. They advised me to change my MTU settings via DrTCP from 1500 - 1400 on my laptop and low and behold I can now browse IE and FF.

interesting

I'm having the same problem. Interesting solution above. I'm going to try it on my desktop in a few minutes. Fingers crossed.

Solution

All hail the Google Gods.

This worked for me:

1. Click Start , type cmd in the Start Search text box, and then
press ENTER.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
netsh winsock reset
3. Restart the computer.

solved - Vista won't connect to web

Thanks! This solution also worked for me:

Thank you!

I had the same problem as posted, and research solutions all day! but this helped me very much, I would like to ad to this solution, that when you are using cmd in window vista it probably will tell you "the requested operation requires elevation" to get around this go to All Programs, Accessories, right click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator. This will let you type the command netsh winsock reset, and then restart your laptop to finally SOLVENT this mess of Microsoft!

I tried to enter that command

I tried to enter that command and it said that "the requested operation requires elevation" any suggestions on what that means.
