failed complete backup

Until today, a complete backup of my vista laptop worked successfully. Today the complete backup failed with 'insufficient space for shadow copy'. After some investigation, I tried to follow instructions from a forum to create a recovery point. The creation of the recovery point died with the same message. I then used vssadmin to change the shadow storage maximum size. I still cannot create a recovery point. Does anyone have any ideas?
