What is the best program to watch movies on my TV?

Hello All,
This is my first post here.
I have invested in an HP Pavilion Pv6 Entertainment notebook. It uses Vista OS.
My question is, what program should I use to watch movies (AVI's mpeg's and other things downloaded or ripped) on my living room flat screen? The flat screen has an HDMI input and the nootbook has an HDMI output. The nootbook has a remote control, just like a TV or DVD player. I tried it with Windows Media Player and the remote doesn't control anything. The computers screen is reproduced exactly on the TV screen.
Is there a default program that is commonly used for this purpose?

I think the remote control works for Windows Media Center. Also, don't hesitate to use the manual from HP. They will explain there how to use the remote and with which programs it works.
My Lenovo F31 notebook also
My Lenovo F31 notebook also has a remote, and it could be used only if the corresponding driver is correctly installed. Did you missed some HP driver ( or software ) ?
