hi there - i have a laptop runing vista, and when i plug stuff into the mic socket I can't hear it - even though there is definitely signal going in, and I can hear it once i've recorded it. I am a musician and i need to hear stuff as i play or sing along to tracks - anyone worked out how to do this as there's no playback level for the mic socket in the mixer as there was in xp. any suggestions gratefully received as it's driving me mad.

Having the Same Problem
I'm having the same problem with my Vista Laptop. I need to hear the sound without having to record it for my USB TV Tuner. If anyone knows a way please let me know. Email me [email protected]
I had the same problem with
I had the same problem with my Vista loaded HP laptop, could not hear any real time sound from my guitar plugged directly into the sound card. I could however record the sound. I tried many things, like updating sound card drivers, still the line in or mic volume setting still did not appear on the speaker properties window, like microsoft said it would, check out

The shop I bought it from said it was a Vista compatibility issue with the integrated sound card and the only way around it was to reformat and revert back to XP. I decided against it and opted for an audio interface, the edirol UA 4fx. I've only just installed it and it seems to work fine. If any of you decide to go down the audio interface route please be aware of vista compatibility issues with which ever device you plan to get.

I had the same problem with
I had the same problem with a dell xps510 laptop. It has a sound card made by Sigmatell. I was able to fix it by adding an item (EnableInputMonitor) to the registry entries that control how the sound card operates, and giving it a value of 01. I found the information on how to do this on the Web (thanks to whoever posted the solution). The place you add this seems to be different for different computers, but you can find more information by doing a web search for "EnableInputMonitor vista microphone".
Vista Messed up again
I've had the same problem with both my Acer laptop and my Emachines tower. they both are receiving an audio signal but yet I can not monitor anything from out of the speakers. I've updated all the manufactures drivers and no luck. I've used XP and I've had no problems from there.
as a musician it's important for me to have the full mixer capability.
I hope this will be addressed .

Screeching sound from recordings on Acer
I am using an Acer 4730z with Windows Vista, I had the same or similar problems with recording, I would get a screeching sound whenever I used a recording application, I updated my sound card driver but had no luck, I stumbled across this solution when I disabled the Mic and it disappeared from the list, I right clicked on the remaining one and clicked on "Show disabled devices and Show disconnected devices", I hope it is clear enough:
Control Panel-Sound Icon-Recording tab-highlight Mic.-Right click-click "Show disabled devices and Show disconnected devices"-highlight Stereo Mixer-right click-enable-right click again-click on "set as default device"-highlight Mic.-disable
After that just right click on the Stereo Mixer click on properties to do recording adjustments. I don't have a problem recording anymore.
I hope this helps someone.
Can't Hear Sound from Microphone on Vista Computer
I have a Gateway ML6714 laptop running Vista with SigmaTel speakers and microphone. I have experienced the same problem but found out how to solve it. However, it may apply only for computers that use the SigmaTel sound solution.
My post http://royen-youcandoit.blogspot.com/2009/03/why-cant-my-voice-be-heard-... in my blogger.com blog details the steps involved in the procedure.
I have created a video version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKH0CN-1BpM which I have posted in YouTube.
You can check them out and hope someone is helped.
Thanks,
Royen
