re-Installing Vista Home Premuim
I sometimes get odd messages to the effect that, for example, Windows Host Process Rundll32, has stopped working, etc. Also as mentioned in an earlier posting I cannot backup any more.

Is it possible to safely reinsert the Vista Reinstallation DVD disc in the hope that it will overwrite the current installed system and replace any missing elements?

Reinstall

Yes. You can reinstall Windows Vista.
It is advisable in this case.

Reinstall OS/backup problem.

First, check your hard drive and see what space you have available.Low disc space will prevent backup. Also, before being aggresive and reinstalling your OS;try a restoration back to when your computer was working properly. If free space is limited,do maintenance;ie,delete temporary files, defrag your hard drive.Don't reinstall your OS as a problem solving action. That should be only as a last resort.

Reinstalling Vista

Thanks for the help Cirian. Will the reinstallation cause any problems with my files etc?

Reinstall O/S backup problem

My problem regarding the reinstallation of the o/s disc is that I sometimes get odd messages to the effect that a rundll 32 file or a shell is missing and I just wondered if reinserting the o/s disc would reinstall anything that was missing.

Re backups.
I've space on the C drive (50% of 60GBs still available) but drive D has only 2.9 GB of 9.99GB. I read in one of these forums that rather than delete older backups there is a preferred method of making more space but I cannot trace the message.

My restore points don't go back far enough. This seems to be a limitatation with Vista Restore, there is only a small amount of storage for these points. I used to use 'Go-Back' with XP and the restore points were a little more generous. Not that I had to use this facility often but they were there if needed.

I've defragged etc.

Perhaps a third party stand-alone backup programme used on an external hard drive would be the answer.

Answers

1. The reinstall will copy the missing files. So... yes... it is a good idea.
2. You can change the amount of space used by System Restore. Read this article to learn how to do it.
3. An external had drive for backup is a good idea. And yes... there are 3rd party applications better than System Restore.

I have lost my installation CD

Hi Friends,

As stated above I have lost my Vista DVD & therefore am afraid that if I have to reinstall Vista in future on my Notebook (Vista came with this), I won't be able to do so.

Is there any solution, please notify.

Thanks

Reinstalling Vista and need to download drivers

My laptop (Windows Vista) crashed a couple of years ago. (I'm using my desktop now) I didn't know what to do with it, so I just set it aside. I didn't remember that I had a reinstallation disc. I came across it and inserted it, entered the master HDD (?) number and it said the HD (?) was now locked!
The start up from the disc actually brought up a screen (hadn't been able to get that much up before now) and the process began. Everything was good until it said I needed to install drivers. They would be on a CD DVD Floppy disc, etc. and I was to insert it. I don't have anything like that for drivers.

What do I do now? Can I download anything and copy to a disc, and then install it?

As you have likely deduced, I am ignorant in all of this.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
