JPEG Enhancer

JPG or JPEG is probably the most used file format for images. From the internet to the most common mobile phone camera, we are all surrounded by them. We use them very often because they are small and easy to transfer. However, small size means also lower quality. Depending on how you create or modify a JPEG file, you might end-up having a low-quality image. Unless you use the right tools, quality remains lost forever. The good news is that there is a tool that can fix such problems.

Jpeg Enhancer is an application produced by a company called VicMan Software. This free tool fixes JPEG/JPG images that suffer from low-quality compression or are prone to have a "blotchy look". It doesn’t use any blur effects to hide noise in the image, but instead it uses a series of smart techniques to restore images back to their true form.

CCleaner - When Disk Cleanup is no longer enough

On our site you can find a lot of articles with tips & tricks about how to speed up Windows Vista and how to have an enjoyable computer experience. One way to have a fast system is to keep it as "clean" as possible: with very little space occupied by temporary or unused files and with little or no invalid registry keys.

One way to achieve this is to use Disk Cleanup. However, this tool can clean only files and not registry keys. A better solution is to use CCleaner - a freeware optimization tool that cleans-up all unnecessary files & invalid registry keys.

Configure Microsoft Office 2007 to save files using the old Office 97-2003 format

Even though we don't generally write about Microsoft Office 2007, we have received many e-mails from people asking us different things about it. One of the most common questions is: 'why Microsoft Office 2007 files cannot be opened by Microsoft Office 2003 or XP?'. That's because this version uses a new file format called Office Open XML. This new format offers a series of advantages, including a smaller file size compared to the format used by the old versions of Microsoft Office. All Microsoft Office 2007 file extensions have an ''x" at the end: '.doc' is now '.docx', '.xls 'is now '.xlsx', etc. By default, older versions of Microsoft Office cannot open files created with version 2007.

However, there are ways to save files created in Microsoft Office 2007 using the old formats. In this article we will describe them for you.

Speed Up Windows Explorer by disabling Thumbnail Previews

Thumbnails are reduced-size versions of your pictures and videos. Their role is to allow you to quickly scan and recognize them while browsing your computer. However, each time you use Windows Explorer, it will spend some time to generate them. Depending on the configuration of your PC and the number of files, this process can be slower or faster. So, if you have an old PC or you just want to make Windows Explorer as snappier as possible, one good tip is to disable Thumbnail Previews.

Handy Recovery - When Deleting is Not for Ever and for Always

I always used to blame people who weren't paying attention when handling files. I kept asking them: How can you be so stupid to delete your personal documents or image files? When I taught my mother to use the computer I told her that 'Shift+Delete' is the total extinction of files, with no possible way of going back. I myself actually believed that for a while.

Then I discovered the file and data recovery software. 'What a great technology'', I said! Just until I had to recover my first accidentally deleted video files. The result: a total mess; all my recovered videos were unplayable, and the ones that I could play were fragmented, with altered sound and misplaced frames. However, there were cases when I managed to recover my lost files.

Disable User Account Control (UAC) for certain Windows Vista applications

There are applications that need administrative permission in order to work properly. Some applications might need access to special system resources, some may have been designed only for Windows XP and do not work that well on Windows Vista, or some may have different bugs and problems. Running them as an administrator will help these applications run without problems. However, each time you start such an application you will see an UAC (User Account Control) prompt asking for your permission to launch it.

This is the reason why many people choose to disable UAC. However, by eliminating the annoying UAC prompts they also lower the security of their system. Fortunately, there is a way to keep UAC turned on and, at the same time, eliminate the prompts for certain applications. In this guide we will show you how to do the following: set an application to always run as an administrator (if needed), create a UAC fix for it that turns off the prompts for that application and install/uninstall the fix.

How to configure the Screen Saver

Screen savers are programs that were initially designed to prevent the so called "Phosphor burn-in" on CRT and plasma monitors. Filling the screen with moving images when you did not use your computer was preventing the loss of image quality over time. Modern LCD monitors are not susceptible to burn-in because the image is not directly produced by phosphors. This is why nowadays, screen savers are used mostly for entertainment or security purposes.

Compared to Windows XP, Windows Vista changes a bit the way you configure your screen saver. In this short tutorial I will show you how to set your screen saver in Windows Vista and how to configure different parameters.
