Returning a computer to manufacturer for new DVD drive

I understand that the computer will be reset to factory settings during the process of fitting the DVD drive. What is the effect of this? Will all the HP and Windows updates automatically be reinstalled when I reconnect to the internet? What effect will resetting to factory settings have on my internet connection? Lastly, my desktop ( HP Pavilion Slimline) runs Vista Home Premium which only allows me to backup data files not the whole computer. What would be the best way to backup the whole computer before I sent it to HP?

re return computer for new DVD drive

when i bought my new computer from gateway,after a couple of weekes my DVD Drive went haywire, i called support and they wanted me to send them computer to replace drive just like you said, i asked them about sending me the drive to install myself and they did that, it took me 10 min to install and did not void my warrentee, i had 15 days to return the old drive and all were pre paid it cost me nothing and very happy with experence they also send complete guide with photos on how to do it

cd/dvd****inspiron desktop 531s

recently i tried to download a software tool to correct a problem with my grandson's computer , and placed a new cd -rw into my drive d and it states place cd into drive . contacted tech support and since this windows vista i needed some instructions first time ever with new dell that i could not copy files or download to disk , anyway i was told all i could do was listen to music that my cd/dvd would only read well i have the specs info part cr579 assy, dvd.16x,sata,hhbare,hlds i just don't understand what if i had to save files for backup i was told new to purchase different drive to write files can anyone help dell sure can't explain why they sold a computer with no way to backup files on cd am lost
